Propofol Sedation Knowledge Center

for Endoscopy & Urology Procedures

As the largest provider of propofol sedation in the country, administered by anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), in a single-specialty ambulatory surgery center setting; we have compiled the following information to help you better understand the wonderful benefits associated with the drug.

PROPOFOL: THE DRUG

The drug, propofol, is far superior when compared to alternative sedation agents.  It works fast and wears off considerably faster; with most patients experiencing very few side-affects as opposed to more traditionally drugs, which can leave a person groggy for hours after a relatively short procedure (sometimes referred to as conscious sedation.)

With the use of propofol, which is supported by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be administered by only persons trained in the administration of general anesthesia and not involved in the conduct of the surgical or diagnostic procedure, your next outpatient procedure could be a much more comfortable, pleasant and safe experience.  Many times in today's modern surgery centers, you can receive propofol sedation for procedures in either endoscopy or urology based centers.

PROPOFOL RESEARCH

Deep Sedation Results in Greater Polyp Yield During Colonoscopy
- Presented at DDW 2009

- By Ed Susman

CHICAGO -- June 2, 2009 -- Performing colonoscopy with patients under deep sedation increases the yield of large polyps by about 25% when compared with performing the procedure when the patient has been administered moderate conscious sedation, researchers stated here on June 2 at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) 2009...(Ready more)

PROPOFOL BENEFITS

» Patient Benefits

Increased Satisfaction

Propofol acts quickly and sedates more deeply, which allows the patient to recover within a few minutes; much faster than with traditional “conscious sedation.”

Fewer Post Procedure Complaints

Nausea is significantly reduced.

Improved Comfort

Patients are more comfortable throughout the entire procedure, often remarking that they just had their best sleep.

Alert Much Faster

Allowing for increased comprehension and retention of diagnosis post- operatively.

Less Pain

Many patients say they were not even aware of the procedure with CRNA administered propofol sedation.

» Sugery Center or Hospital Benefits

Improved Economics

Maintain current staffing levels while increasing your patient flow by 20% to 25% with faster patient recovery, faster procedures due to less movement and faster room turnaround.

Patient Retention

Patients are much more likely to return and recommend a facility with propofol sedation rather than search out propofol sedation possibly offered at a competing facility.

Exceptional Care

Physicians and their patients enjoy having a helping hand focused entirely on monitoring the patient’s airway, vital signs and anesthesia dosage; while registered nurses enjoy the help with patient turnover.

Predictable Recovery Intervals

Allows your facility to increase daily procedures without adding staff or paying additional overtime; while simultaneously providing the option to use the time saved to consolidate current procedures into less hours or generate more time for office visits.

» Physician and Nursing Staff Benefits

Propofol acts quick

Propofol metabolizes much faster than traditional “conscious sedation”; allowing for a more efficient patient flow; typically saving 8 to 10 minutes from each procedure, while waiting for the patient to "fall asleep," since propofol acts within seconds of anesthesia team administering the drug.

Patients do not move during procedure

Allows the physician who is performing the procedure to focus completely on the procedure. without interruptions due to the patient’s level of sedation.

Predictable recovery time

Allows for scheduling the most efficient procedure blocks, reducing the recovery bed bottleneck often associated with “conscious sedation"

Patients are more alert during physician consult

Patients will be far more alert when speaking to the physician at time of discharge; minimizing the amount of returned phone calls post- procedure.

Patients are much steadier in the recovery with minimal PONV

Fewer worries for nursing staff.

PROPOFOL FDA BOTTLE LABELLING

American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA)

American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA)

The statement in the ASA-AANA Joint Statement Regarding Propofol Administration, dated April 14, 2004 states:

“Whenever propofol is used for sedation/anesthesia, it should be administered only by persons trained in the administration of general anesthesia, who are not simultaneously involved in these surgical or diagnostic procedures. This restriction is concordant with specific language in the propofol package insert, and failure to follow these recommendations could put patients at increased risk of significant injury or death.” is consistent with the principles set forth in this statement.
